Frequently asked questions

Connaught Hall was established by the Duke of Connaught in 1919, at Torrington Square; he gave the Hall to the University of London in 1928, and it moved to its present location – a splendid Georgian terrace with a Grade II listed façade overlooking Tavistock Square gardens – in 1961.

The Hall accommodates 230 full-time students of the various colleges and institutes of the University; the majority are first-year undergraduates. There is an even mix of men and women, and a great diversity of cultural and social backgrounds. Most accommodation is in single study-bedrooms with shared toilet and shower facilites, but there are also five twin rooms, seventeen single en suite rooms, two en suite double rooms (for couples), and a two-bedroom flat. Amenities include: dining hall, laundrette, common rooms with TV including FreeSat, computer room, library, private courtyard garden, and a bar managed and staffed by Hall residents. Every room has telephone and high-speed internet connections.

The resident Warden (warden@connaught-hall.org.uk), assisted by five student Senior Members (wardens.team@connaught-hall.org.uk), is responsible for student welfare & pastoral care, discipline & conflict resolution, Hall community & social life, the Residents' Club & Hall bar, out-of-hours emergency cover, and readmissions. Find out more about the Warden and his team on their web page (click here).

Many of the residents in Hall are experiencing life away from home for the first time; for some, home is on the other side of the world. And whilst London is undoubtedly a vibrant and exciting place, it can sometimes be a lonely and impersonal city. So the Warden aims to make Connaught Hall a safe, friendly, supportive, and tolerant home-from-home in which all residents can study, relax, and socialise as they wish, and a warm, welcoming place where opportunities are provided for residents' personal, social, academic and cultural development.

The elected Residents' Club Committee (committee@connaught-hall.org.uk), under the supervision of the Warden, organises social, cultural, and sporting events, runs the Hall bar, and provides recreation facilities.

Officers of the Residents' Club

The management of housekeeping, security, maintenance, and catering facilities and services is dealt with by the Bursar's Office (info@connaught-hall.org.uk). Financial matters, including all payments, are handled at the office in Hughes Parry Hall on Cartwright Gardens (fees@connaught-hall.org.uk).

Most accommodation matters (room allocations, admissions, and contract dates) are dealt with centrally by the Intercollegiate Halls Accommodation Bureau - InHAB (inhab@connaught-hall.org.uk) - working closely with the Hall Warden.
